Voicing and devoicing in Irish English voiced plosives
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigates the extent of voicing in the voiced plosives /b, d/ across a range of phonetic contexts in Irish English. Spectrographic and waveform analysis showed that /b, d/ were almost always voiceless sentence-initially, substantially devoiced sentence-finally, and varied considerably sentence-medially. Further analysis of sentencemedial position found that if the plosive was part of a stressed syllable it was substantially less voiced than if it was part of an unstressed syllable. Focus also had an effect: less voicing was found in a nuclear syllable in narrow focus than in broad focus or a deaccented tail. Comparison of these findings with an analogous study [6] of two other varieties of English (Wisconsin and North Carolina) did not verify the hypothesis that Irish English has a greater tendency to devoice medial /b/. Instead, there was a large inter-speaker difference, with two speakers showing devoicing of /b/ frequently and two speakers infrequently.

Voicing Contrast of Intervocalic Plosives in Hungarian
The conflict of articulatory targets may result in neutralization of phonological oppositions, for instance in languages, where prevoiced and nonaspirated voiceless plosives constitute voicing contrast, voicing may be ceased leading to partial or entire devoiced plosives. The question has been arisen by several studies, whether the neutralization is entire regarding the phonetic voicing (type, ...

Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers" (2013). Undergraduate Honors Theses. Paper 429. Abstract The acquisition of non-native sounds is a prominent feature of second language acquisition. Mandarin does not permit the voiced plosives /b d g/ or plosives in the syllable coda position, both features of many English words. This disparity presents a...
متن کاملThe Social Life of Setswana Ejectives
This paper presents a first phonetic analysis of voiced, devoiced and ejectivized stop sounds in Setswana taken from two different speech databases. It is observed that rules governing the voicing/devoicing processes depend on sociophonetic and ethnolinguistic factors. Speakers, especially women, from the rural North West area of South Africa tend to preserve the phonologically stronger devoice...
متن کاملDevoicing of Phonologically Voiced Obstruents: Is European Portuguese Different from Other Romance Languages?
This paper presents results for voicing maintenance during European Portuguese (EP) stop and fricative production. Results showed that EP presented a high amount of devoicing for all phonologically voiced stops and fricatives. This is in contrast to classical literature reporting high voicing maintenance during stop closure for Romance languages, but confirms our preliminary results from previo...
متن کاملEffects of voicing on /t, d/ tongue/palate contact in English and norwegian
Our paper addresses the question of cross-linguistic similarities and differences in the articulatory patterns of plosives. An EPG investigation of the English and Norwegian plosives /t/ and /d/ shows a larger contact area between tongue and palate for /t/ than for /d/ in both languages. The investigation also shows a more laminal articulation, larger contact areas, for both plosives in Norwegi...
